About these celestial patterns

The night sky is the oldest thing anyone has ever embroidered, and it suits counted work better than almost any other subject: a moon is a circle, a star is a point, and both of them land cleanly on a grid without any of the fudging that a soft-edged photograph needs.

These are drawn for black aida with gold and silver against it, which is the whole trick — the same chart on white reads as a diagram, and on black it reads as a night. Moon phase arcs, an ornate sun with a face, a zodiac wheel, a moth crossing a full moon.
