About these moths patterns

A moth with its wings spread is as close to a ready-made cross stitch chart as nature gets: bilaterally symmetrical, flat, and patterned in blocks rather than gradients. Count one half and you have counted both.

These are drawn as natural history plates — a luna moth with its long tails, a death's head hawkmoth with the skull plain on its thorax, an atlas moth, a stag beetle, a dragonfly's four veined wings. Worked on black, which is how a specimen case looks and why the pale greens and ambers carry.
